Metode transfer data nirkabel dimulai dengan infra merah, kemudian dengan cepat digantikan oleh bluetooth yang kecepatan, kemudahan dan fleksibilitasnya 100 kali lebih mumpuni dari apa yang bisa dilakukan oleh infra merah. Namun baru-baru ini sekelompok peneliti internasional yang berbasis di Nanyang Technological University Singapura (NTU) dan A*STAR Institut untuk Riset Infocomm (I ² R). Tim yang bernama NTU-I2R ini, telah merancang teknologi nirkabel berkecepatan super tinggi. Kecepatan alat ini diklaim 1.000 kali lebih cepat dari bluetooth.Menurut sebuah laporan dari Hexus, alat tersebut bernama chipset virtus yang mampu mentransfer data dengan kecepatan hingga 2 Gb/s, selain itu daya yang dibutuhkan dalam proses transfer data sangat rendah.
Kemungkinan dalam waktu dekat akan tersedia diperangkat mobile seperti tablet dan smartphone, dengan kecepatan transfer data hingga 2 Gb/s, memungkinkan transfer DVD berkapasita 8Gb hanya membutyhkan waktu 30 detik. Chipset virtus terintegrasi 60GHz untuk multi-gigabit per transmisi per detik.
Chipset virtus terdiri dari 3 komponen penting antara lain: antena, transceiver dan prosesor baseband.
Teknologi chipset virtus ini akan memiliki dampak yang sangat signifikan, memungkinkan berbagai aplikasi baru seperti tampilan nirkabel, mobile-komputasi terdistribusi, video live streaming definisi tinggi , real-time interaktif multi-user game, dan lebih banyak lagi.
